Guest Services Representative

Gunston Hall is pleased to announce a part-time guest services position at an unparalleled historic site on scenic Mason Neck in Fairfax County, Virginia.  We are seeking candidates who are friendly, people-oriented, love history, and are eager to share Gunston Hall’s story with visitors.  Guest services staff divide their time between the Visitor Center and the mansion.  Their responsibilities center around ensuring a positive and content-rich experience at Gunston Hall.  

Specifically, guest services staff

•    project a positive image, serving as an ambassador for the museum;
•    greet visitors, in a pleasant and welcoming manner;
•    lead tours that are accurate and engaging for visitors of all ages;  
•    assist with the preparation for and implementation of public programs and special events;
•    promote and relay accurate information about planned programs and events;
•    monitor the museum exhibitions in the visitor center and period room installations in the mansion;
•    interact with visitors throughout their time on the property;
•    answer telephones;
•    schedule tours and special events;
•    keep accurate records, including admissions records;
•    reconcile cash and charge receipts;
•    support other projects related to Gunston Hall’s educational mission.

The ideal candidate will be , interested in history, solution-oriented, detail-oriented, able to adapt to changing circumstances, and committed to presenting Gunston Hall in the best possible light to teachers, students, program attendees, museum visitors, and other members of the general public.

This position reports to the Director of Education and Guest Experiences.  It requires
•    excellent customer service skills;
•    responsibility and trustworthiness;
•    knowledge of basic office procedures;
•    ability to read and write the English language and to understand, follow, and give oral instructions;
•    knowledge of computers, telephone systems, audio-visual equipment, and cash registers;
•    ability to reconcile cash and credit card receipts;
•    ability to maintain an electronic calendar in order to schedule events;
•    exhibition of professional manner and dress at all times
•    ability to multi-task;
•    ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Both weekend and weekday shifts are available; applicants should expect to work two to three days a week.  This is an hourly (wage) position.  It does not have health insurance, retirement or leave.

Development Assistant

George Mason’s Gunston Hall is seeking an ambitious, energetic, and collaborative individual to serve as the organization’s part-time Development Assistant.   Gunston Hall is implementing an exciting 20-year Campus Master Plan and building a growing Development Department to lead the fundraising initiatives necessary to fulfill its vision and fully implement the Plan.

Working under the supervision of the Director of Development, the Development Assistant is responsible for all administrative aspects of development activities and plays an important role by providing administrative support to the Development Department, participating in all fundraising activities, and coordinating strategic functions in support of Gunston Hall’s development and fundraising initiatives.  In performing these duties, the Development Assistant is expected to demonstrate a commitment to organization, accuracy, detail, the ability to meet deadlines, the ability to work as part of a high functioning team, exemplary communication skills, and a passion for the mission of Gunston Hall.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence.
  • Gather and maintain foundation, corporation and individual donor files.
  • Create monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed.
  • Continually update and correct database records.
  • Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate foundations and individual donors.
  • Write donor profiles based on research.
  • Assist in revising and enriching membership program.
  • Support strong relationships with all donors, members, prospects, and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate production and mailing of annual appeal letters.
  • Assist with tasks related to foundation grant proposals and reports.
  • Assist with event planning, execution and follow-up including the maintenance of guest lists, gathering and preparation of registration materials, and other duties as assigned for fund-raising events.
  • Handle administrative details associated with the Board of Regents Development Committee meetings (i.e. prepare and distribute notices, agendas, minutes, etc.).
  • Administrative and other duties as assigned.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Support strong relationships with members of the Gunston Hall Board of Regents.
  • Support strong relationships with members of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) and the national office of The NSCDA.
  • Support strong relationships with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Serve as a representative of the organization and articulate Gunston Hall’s mission and goals for a wide range of audiences.

Qualifications for this position include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and progressive experience within a non-profit development office is required.
  • Experience with Donor Perfect or comparable fundraising software is required.
  • Experience within a cultural organization, museum, or historic site is preferred.
  • Experience with public-private partnerships is preferred.
  • A passion for George Mason, Gunston Hall, the Virginia Declaration of Rights, history, historic sites, and associated themes and topics is preferred.

Compensation will be based on qualifications. Performance will be evaluated based on the achievement of collaboratively determined team and personal goals specific to the requirements of the position.

The mission of Gunston Hall is to utilize fully its physical and scholarly resources to stimulate continuing public exploration of democratic ideals as first presented by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.  Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and a National Historic Landmark, Gunston Hall was built by George Mason from 1755-1759.
